I am Steve Cook, Senior Pastor at Wesley. I was born, raised, and educated in Kentucky. My wife, Dicie Rue, and I grew up together, and we joyfully serve the Lord together. I felt the Spirit of God tugging at my heart when I was 17 years old. I discussed this with my pastor and older friends and then was licensed as a Minister and later ordained. I have served as both a Baptist and Methodist pastor for more than 40 years. I loved the Wesleyan emphasis on God’s Grace and our Free Will to respond to it. My key word in ministry is “flexibility” — if one cannot bend, he/she will break.
I began my ministry here at Wesley on July 1, 2014. Already, wonderful ministry moments and stories have been shared. We’re all about these three things: Invite. Disciple. Serve. I enjoy reading, woodworking, family, and some sports. I firmly believe the words of this Psalm: “This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24) Call me. Meet me for coffee somewhere. Or drop by the church. Let’s get to know each other.
As of May 2014, I have been working with the Wesley Family for thirteen years. I feel very blessed to be a part of such a loving and giving congregation. I enjoy working and fellowshipping with United Methodist Women, reading and playing Bridge. My husband, Mike, and I have two sons, Damon and Brad, and seven grandchildren.
I was born and raised right here in Sulphur Springs, Texas, where at the age of 12, I was saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. After graduating from SSHS, I studied music at Texas A&M University at Commerce. I became a member of Wesley UMC in 2002 after meeting my wife, Amanda, in 2001. God has placed in me a passion for worship; and as Minister of Music at Wesley UMC, my heart’s desire is to lead His people and others in a joy-filled and sincere worship.

I started playing organ at Wesley in 1999. We replaced the organ in 2011 with a keyboard to accommodate praise music and to have more instrument options. The worship service has become such a spirit-filled service, and it is my joy to serve with Joe Clark and Mary Ellen Kirkland on the worship team. I feel the spirit move as we prepare for worship each week. Wesley has been our church family in so many ways. The warmth and compassion has grown stronger each year. I have been married to my best friend, Gaylon, for 50 years. We have two daughters and sons-in-law and one precious granddaughter, Evie. We are living our dream in our log home at Lake Fork. I sing with the North East Texas Choral Society. I look forward to meeting you and sharing my Wesley family with you.
Mary Ellen Kirkland
Greetings! My name is Mary Ellen Kirkland. I am the church pianist, aka ‘the piano lady,’ when someone forgets my name! I have played the piano for Sunday school since the age of 12, and for church services since the age of 15. I have been at Wesley since March 2006. It is a joy to work with the musicians here, to hear the congregational singing, and to be a part of the fellowship which is so strong. My hobbies include reading, flower gardening, bird watching, and playing with my family, especially water sports. My family includes Malcolm, Jana & Danny, and Paul & Kim, and grands, Kaden and Caelyn. We are blessed! Come visit Wesley; you’ll be glad you did!
I joined the Wesley United Methodist staff as Youth Minister in January 2016. In addition to serving as youth minister, I have served as the Music Minister since 2014. My wife Amanda and I have been married since 2003 and have two children, Ruth and JC. I have a passion for leading youth to discover the Gospel of Jesus Christ through outreach and discipleship. I enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing and also enjoys playing the drums and guitar.
Hello! I’m Julie Weir, and I have been the nursery director here at Wesley Methodist since 2002. I’ve been a member at Wesley for 35 years. I am a high school teacher at Como-Pickton, and I have a daughter, Sara, and a son, Steven. I enjoy riding horses with my mother, playing the piano, and reading. All nursery staff have completed Ministry Safe Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Training. Hope to see you at our church, and remember that Wesley loves kids!
Good day! I am Kara Lane. I have been attending Wesley for fifteen years and helping in the nursery for over ten years. I am a kindergarten teacher at North Hopkins ISD. I enjoy reading, spending time with my daughter, Kenna, and going to rodeos! The kids currently in the nursery would love to meet new friends. Your kids will be safe and have fun at Wesley! Hope to see your family at church.
Director of Children’s Ministries
Hi, my name is Marieke de Witte. I was born and raised in the Netherlands. After graduating, I went to work in a hospital for a few years. In the 80s, my husband, Hendrik, and I got married, bought our first dairy and became the parents of our 3 beautiful daughters, Christine, Ria, and Kim. In May 1989, we sold our place, packed our belongings, and moved to Sulphur Springs, TX, where we went right back into dairy business again for the next 20 years. Our neighbors invited us to Wesley UMC and that has been our church-home ever since! Over the years, I’ve spent lots and lots of time with our youth and children, teaching, putting together curriculum, going on mission trips and organizing VBS weeks and other special events. For the last ten years, I’ve been honored to be Wesley’s Children Director. It is my responsibility to make sure that everyone who works with the children completes the Ministry Safe Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Training as required by the United Methodist Church. If you can’t find me behind my desk, I’m probably at the church in the Children’s Wing where Wesley provides a room for Little Acorn Preschool, a ministry of Wesley UMC. There I have the privilege to teach our toddlers. Hope to have a chance to meet you soon!
